Tips to keep your pots and pans at full performance.

When it comes to cooking with cast iron cookware, you are not only investing in high-quality kitchen tools, but you are also opening the door to a unique cooking experience.
These utensils are appreciated for their durability, versatility and the improvement they bring to the flavor of your dishes. But to maintain their optimal performance and extend their lifespan, it is essential to properly care for them.

Here are some tips to get the most out of your cast iron cookware:

  • Seasoning Cast Iron: Before you begin cooking with cast iron utensils, it is important to “season” or “season” the surface. This involves heating the utensil over medium heat for a few minutes and then spreading a thin layer of vegetable oil over the entire surface. Then, bake the utensil for one hour at 180°C. This process creates a natural non-stick layer and prevents food from sticking.
  • Gentle Cleaning: After each use, wait for the utensil to cool before cleaning it. Avoid using abrasive detergents or metal scouring pads, as they can damage the non-stick layer you have created. Instead, use hot water and a soft brush or sponge. If food remains stuck, you can boil a little water in the utensil to loosen it.
  • Complete Drying: After washing the utensil, dry it completely with a towel to avoid the formation of rust. It’s also a good idea to lightly heat the utensil on the stove to make sure it’s completely dry.
  • Oil Maintenance: After each use, apply a thin layer of oil to the inner surface of the utensil. This will help maintain its non-stick coating and prevent rust.
  • Proper Storage: Store your cast iron utensils in a dry, well-ventilated place. If you stack multiple utensils, place a piece of parchment paper or cloth between them to prevent scratches.
  • Cooking with Oil or Fat: When cooking with cast iron cookware, add a small amount of oil or fat before cooking. This improves the non-stick coating and enhances the flavor of your meals.
  • Avoid Acidic Cooking: Avoid cooking highly acidic foods, such as tomatoes or vinegars, in cast iron cookware for long periods of time, as they can damage the surface.

By following these tips, your cast iron cookware will serve you for generations and will continue to enhance your meals with its unique flavor. At Hearthstone Cookware, we offer a wide selection of high-quality cast iron pots, pans, and saucepans so you can enjoy cooking like never before.
